However, let me discuss the Coast Guard because I think their situation is a little different. It's different than almost any other group of federal workers. On Tuesday, these brave men and women of the Coast Guard did not receive a paycheck. They are the only branch of the U.S. military that is currently out there around the world, risking their lives for the American people, and yet they are not getting paid. We love and appreciate all branches of the military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines - they are all working hard and getting paid. However, the men and women of the Coast Guard are not getting paid, and that's simply unfair. Moreover, they can't leave the Coast Guard or they would get court-martialed. They continue to work hard, saving lives in my state of Alaska and beyond, without receiving proper compensation. This discrepancy led a number of Democrats and Republicans, almost one-quarter of the members of the U.S. Senate, to co-sponsor a bill that aims to pay the Coast Guard.
